Where this saying comes from
A modern workplace farewell phrase, not an old saying: retirement itself only became a common life stage in the twentieth century, so the language around it is correspondingly young and fairly direct.
When to give it
The leaving drinks, the last day, or the week after when the house has gone quiet. From colleagues it works best signed by everyone; from family it works best hung somewhere he or she will sit down.
